PRAXTON BUCKS HIGH COUNCIL

LOTAITH --- Explicitly defying the Vast Empire High Council for the third time this year, President Riley Praxton, the elected civil head of the Provisional Government of Rheagent, unilaterally paid the late dues of Rheagent to the New Republic due to aid given by the latter government to Rheagent before the Empire's current occupation of the system. "Like all legal debtors, we must pay our fees on time," Praxton told reporters at a press conference earlier today.
Leaders of both political parties in the Rheagent system criticized the move made by the President. "Where does Praxton acquire the credits, Imperial, Corporate or New Republican, to pay-off such debts?" asked Representative Vorlock, a respected member of the Technocratic party, "Clearly it is originating from some budget item not yet approved by either the Vast Empire High Council or the various members of the Provisional Government of Rheagent."
The Ra'pallurs, who constitute the second largest political party in the Rheagent system, were no kinder towards Praxton. "President Praxton has blatantly betrayed the civilian populace of the Rheagent system," said Ra'pallur Representative Oswald Lacrye, "The purpose of the last meeting of the Provisional Government of Rheagent was to discuss the presence of three more Vast Empire Army garrisons in our system. Nothing whatsoever was discussed on the subject of our prior debts to the New Republic nor was any solid decision made pertaining to the payment of those debts. President Praxton has clearly misused his executive powers and has sent a questionable message that we are still in favor of the New Republic despite our occupation by the Empire. Rheagent, in the opinion of both myself and my party, should not align itself with the New Republic nor pay any debts to the latter government whatsoever."
The High Council has declined to comment on the subject.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Since the annexation of the Rheagent system by the forces of the Empire, the Provisional Government of Rheagent under President Praxton has been allowed to continue operating, but only under the watchful eye of the Vast Empire.
