Chief Engineer aboard the LCR 'Duty'
Biography[edit]
Appearance[edit]
Kad Blayn was a tall human with dark skin and darker eyes, such a dark brown that they might have been mistaken for the colour of coal. The loss of his left eye left a trail of three parallel scars over it (mostly covered by an eyepatch. He keeps a short, neat, beard but is otherwise clean shaven - bald, no tattoos and quite muscular.
Personality[edit]
A usually placid man, Blayn was a good guy at heart. Slightly repentant of authority, his humorous and often sarcastic approach to situations is usually looked down on by his superior officers (explaining his being MCPO after close to 14 years of service). He might have a loose tongue and some less than reputable connections with the black market, but Blayn is loyal and good-hearted, not to mention he has the street-type of wisdom that only the Hutts can school you in.
History[edit]
Born on Nal Hutta to a slave woman, Blayn never knew his father. The utilisation of his mother as a woman of the night, coupled with lack of adequate protection led her to grow pregnant and give birth to Blayn. The Hutts had no further use for her, so they sold her to some shop owner on Tattooine. Blayn himself was taken pity upon by one of the mercenaries in the Hutt Cartels, a top bounty hunter by the name of Yuren Rav: a Corellian-turned-Mandalorian after invoking the Mandalorian tradition of Cin Vhetin. He never had it easy, despite the success of his guardian, but Blayn was always well treated by Rav. He earned his name of 'Saber' after killing a man with a beskad for breaking into their home. Saber was also a play off the fact his first name was Kad - the Mandalorian word for Blade. Some of the kids at school also called him Blayn the Blade, thus making 'Saber' even more fitting.
Rav taught him a great many things, although rather than adopt the same cynical mindset as his Bounty-Hunter guardian, Blayn turned it into a sarcastic, humorous one, making light of everything just about. He learnt how to fight, how to wield weapons, track prey, but his main interest always lay with engines and mechanics. He was always hanging around the swoops that were operated and maintained by the Hutts, even going so far as to add illegal boosters to an old swoop he himself had done up. He had a natural affinity for the stuff and became Rav's engineer, helping him build or repair any vehicles he needed - especially the small cruiser Rav maintained at the Hutts' expense.
All his training seemed to be for naught the day he turned 17 -- the Hutts double crossed Rav, the resulting fallout causing Rav's death and thereby the loss of a guiding star in Blayn's world. Mad with fury, Blayn infiltrated the responsible cartel's lair and killed the presiding Hutt. He was captured and sentenced to life in slavery. Fortunately for him, this wasn't to be.
Just as all seemed lost, a raid by Imperial Commandos on the palace resulted in his freedom. The cartel in question had been dabbling in Imperial business far too much for the local authorities' liking and as such, they decided to take the Hutts down a peg - which they did quite successfully. He was enamored in the speeder bikes they used, but before he could get offworld to a recruiting station, he was caught up to by a ruthless hutt enforcer who took his left eye as payment for his transgressions against the Hutts.
After getting patched up by a black market contact, Blayn found his way to the nearest recruiting station and signed up as a scout. However, he couldn't afford a replacement eye and as such was unable to serve as a scout in the capacity he wanted. Instead, he was relegated to being a mechanic - something he's resented his entire life. When the chance came to work on a bigger ship, Blayn jumped at it. It wasn't long aboard that ship as an engineer until the Empire fell and Blayn was given an option; continue with his crew or find his own way. Being the man he was, Blayn chose the latter and left for something else he had heard of - something far more principled and open minded. See, Blayn was an Imperial, but not as fervent in his belief as many around him. He had never been afraid of COMPNOR or anything like that.. so when the chance came to join the Vast Empire, knowing it was a far more morally guided organisation, Blayn jumped at it.
Eventually, he came to be assigned to Hades' crew as a misfit and fellow survivor of the Hutts.
