The Skill[edit]
Before your character may serve as an astrogator or helmsman with the Vast Empire Navy (in other words, before you may use astrogation skills in any story posts), and before you start the second tier of the Bridge Officer certification program, you must demonstrate that your character has the basic knowledge necessary to successfully guide Imperial vessels through hyperspace jumps. This knowledge (and its practical application) is known as the "Astrogation" Basic Ancillary Skill, in VEN role-playing parlance. You demonstrate this knowledge (and thereby earn the "Astrogation" Ancillary Skill for your character's Bio) by completing the following mission.
The Mission : "Without Precise Calculations We Could Fly Right Through A Star..."[edit]
Write a short story (500 words, minimum) in which your character must guide a hyperdrive-equipped Imperial craft away from several gravity wells and jump to hyperspace. VENA prefers that the depicted ship is the type of spacecraft on which you currently serve, whether starfighter or capital ship, but the ultimate choice of spacecraft is up to you. Research the vessel depicted in your story, and use the information you uncover to detail the challenge(s) your character must confront to safely complete the jump (Are you working with a staff aboard a capital ship, is it you and a droid in a snubfighter, or do you only have a few possible courses in a bare-bones astrogation unit aboard a TIE variant? Are you accepting coordinates from a third party in preparation for a coordinated group jump?). Be sure to describe the process of "navigating through hyperspace:" include plotting a course, programming the course into the computer, overcoming any obstacles or escaping any gravity wells in your current location, activating the drive, and jumping into hyperspace itself. When complete, post your short story to a new thread in the Navy ComNet (making sure to mark it as a Mission for the Astrogation Ancillary Skill), and wait for review. If a VENA staff member deems that you have satisfied all the mission parameters, you will have earned the Ancillary Skill "Astrogation" for your character, and that character may then use the associated knowledge in future story posts.
