Computing Basics

Throughout the galaxy, nearly all sentient beings have acquired the use of computers and advanced manufactured technologies to improve their lives and civilizations. While the Galactic standard is not applicable in many societies, it is the standard to which the Empire holds true.

What follows are the basic elements of the Galactic computing grid, from the tiniest microcomputer to planet-controlling mainframes.

Data Measurement[edit]

Data can be measured using a standard system devised over the centuries by the Galactic Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (GIEEE):

  • Ta – smallest unit of measurement, nominally a 0 or 1 switch
  • Trem – smallest practical unit of measurement to define an amount of computer storage; 8 tats
  • Kilotrem (Kt) – 1,024 trems
  • Rt – 1,024 Kt = 1,048,576 trem
  • Bz – 1,024 Rt = 1,048,576 Kt = 1,073,741,824 trem
  • Sk – 1,024 Bz = 1,048,576 Rt = 1,073,741,824 Kt = 1,099,511,627,776 trem
