Outer Rim War 3
Overview
The Vast Empire participated in the third instalment of the Outer Rim Wars in 2007. The competition began on February 3rd, and was completed on March 18th. The Rebel Faction, comprised of Rebel Squadrons, The Rebel Alliance, New Republic 5th Fleet, and Escuadron Lores del Sith won in the eighth week of competition by default when the Dark Jedi Brotherhood of the Sith faction suddenly withdrew from the competition.
Every week, the factions would compete in a variety of Star Wars games with points being scored for wins and losses. At the end of the weekend, the points were tallied and the top faction was deemed the winner that week. The conflict was over the Subterrel Sector, located in the Outer Rim. The Sector has 12 planets and at the start of the conflict, each faction occupied 4 of them. Every week, the winner gained a planet from each of the losing factions with the object being to conquer all of the planets in the sector.
Throughout the competition, the Vast Empire was represented by Arturus, Kairo, Tomas, Yillis, Sandwich Sam, C-3PX2, and Jaden.

Rules of War[edit]
Factions[edit]
Every club was assigned to play for a particular faction and every week, the factions would compete against each other. Games against people in your own faction were strictly limited. Whereas three games against any opponent per week was the limit, only three internal faction games total were permitted per week.
Rebel Faction:
Rebel Squadrons
New Republic 5th Fleet
Escuadron Lores del Sith
The Rebel Aliiance
Imperial Faction:
Emperor's Hammer
Galactic Empire
Vast Empire
United Pilot's Alliance
Sith Faction:
Dark Brotherhood
TIE Fighter Alliance
Star Vipers
Games[edit]
The following games were permitted during ORW3. Empire at War, Battlefront 2, and Battlefront were all worth double points due to the time required to play a match and the difficulty faced by many trying to find opponents and set up games. This was a source of controversy amongst some during the course of ORW3 but the policy remained in place.
Empire at War
Battlefront 2
Battlefront
Republic Commando
Jedi Academy
Jedi Outcast
X-Wing Alliance
X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter
Scoring[edit]
Participants were limited to three matches against any opponent during each week. In addition, participants could only play three matches total against players from their own faction. Participants who played against their own faction received half points and participants that played matches using the games Empire at War, Battlefront, and Battlefront 2 received double points. In order to ensure that people could not avoid skilled players, all participants had to sign up using the match bot which then assigned games.
1v1 Matches:
Win: 6 points
Loss: 3 points
Team Matches:
Win: 4 points per player
Loss: 2 points per player
1v1v1 Matches:
Win: 8 points
2nd: 5 points
3rd: 3 points
Every week, the faction with the highest score was deemed the winner and took control of two planets in the Subterrel system, one from each faction.
The Course of the Battle[edit]
Week 1[edit]
The opening battles in the conflict started off slow. In the end, week 1 almost seemed like a prelude for what was to come rather than the first major blow in an epic conflict. Due to computer problems (actually the use of a different scoring output document from which it is impossible to tally individual contributions and ranks), the successes of Vast Empire personnel could be not completed assessed but the contributions were significant. At the end of the weekend, the small but closely fought battle ended in favour of the Sith faction.
Faction: | Points: |
---|---|
Sith | 762 |
Rebel | 706 |
Imperial | 653 |
Week 2[edit]
Week 2 was strikingly different from week 1. If week 1 appeared to be a mere prelude, week 2 was the real thing. Throughout the weekend, the battle raged between the three factions with the Rebels and Imperials striking back hard against the Sith who had scored initial victory a week earlier. In the end, the Rebel attacked withered and the Imperials scored an overwhelming victory. One officer stated that "The Teyeong System battle was a great example of cooperation between the Imperial Army and Navy, as well as an example of the dedication, courage, training, and leadership of the Imperial forces" while another called the success a "stunning and successful attack". [1]
Faction: | Points: |
---|---|
Imperial | 1277 |
Rebel | 823 |
Sith | 758 |
Week 3[edit]
Throughout week 3, the Imperial faction was in the lead after scoring several important victories early in the battle. By the end, however, Sith forces managed to overwhelm the lead Imperial units and forced them to withdraw after sustained fire. Having managed a success the week before, the Imperials were unable to build upon that and thus lost the system they had fought so hard to gain. The Rebels were unable to put up a significant fighter against either faction and ultimately were driven back much as they had been in the second week of the conflict. One Imperial officer was quoted as saying the following about the result: "The Sith overwhelmed us sheerly by numbers. Our elite forces could not handle the quantity of soldiers, but eventually quality will overcome quantity." [2]

Week 4[edit]
After the Sith struck back to recover losses in week 2, it was time for the Rebels to score their maiden victory. Much like the Imperial two weeks earlier, the Rebel victory was overwhelming and complete. Neither the Sith nor the Imperials were able to reverse Rebel advances and fighting between the Imperials and Sith ended in a virtual draw either neither gaining position over the other. One rebel politician declared, prematurely, the following about the Rebel success: "This victory signals the turning point in this conflict, and I intend to back our forces with all my support, until the end." [3]

Week 5[edit]
The Rebels tried hard to build upon their successes from the week earlier and took a commanding lead into the final day of battle. The Sith, however, struck back with everything they had and by the end of the battle, they had reversed Rebel gains and won the closest battle in weeks. The Imperial forces were completely outclassed by both the Rebels and the Sith and were completely driven from the battlefield. Any attempt at regrouping and reinforcing after a humiliating defeat the week earlier was not to be as the Imperials were completely unable to concentrate an attack on either Rebel or Sith positions. With this, the Imperial position began to become extremely precarious. One more loss and the Imperials would be driven from the system.

Week 6[edit]
Week 6 was to or die for the Imperials. A loss in battle would have meant the loss of their final planetary holding in the sector and would leave the Imperial fleet no option but to withdraw and plan for an attack elsewhere. Once again, a coordinated Imperial assault was not to be. In the end, neither the Rebels nor the Imperials were able to score major victories against a rejuvenated Sith side and, as a result, by the end of the weekend the result was never in doubt. A heroic effort to defend their last planet ended in failure and the Imperials were forced to withdraw, leaving a weakened Rebel side to counter the growing and strengthening Sith threat. One news report from the Subterrel Sector summarized Imperial loses in the campaign as follows: "Over 600,00 Imperial Army officers and troopers have been killed in battle. 1.7 million were wounded. In the Navy, 1.2 million were killed, most when the Sith took the Teyeong System. 3.3 million Navy personnel were injured in this conflict." [4]

Week 7[edit]
With the Imperials defeated and retreating by week 7, their participation, and the participation of the Vast Empire had ended. The Imperials hardly took note of who continued to fight as the loss had been bitter and there was much to be done in order to regroup and refocus on a new target.
Faction: | Points: |
---|---|
Sith | 789 |
Rebel | 772.5 |
Week 8[edit]
Prior to the battle resuming in week 8, the Dark Brotherhood, which was the most powerful club in the Sith faction, suddenly withdrew from competition for what appear to be unspecified reasons. As a result, all of the gains made by the Sith were reversed and the Rebel Faction was declared the winner by default. A disappointing conclusion to a long fought battle but Rebel persistence won the day in the end.
Vast Empire Participation[edit]
In total, seven members participated in the Outer Rim War. Their contributions are listed below as well as the grand totals for VE participation. The Imperials participated for six weeks until they were finally driven out of the Subterrel Sector.
Name: | Games: | Wins: | Points: |
---|---|---|---|
Arturus | 208 | 181 | 975 |
Kairo | 218 | 168 | 883 |
Tomas | 90 | 40 | 672 |
Yillis | 49 | 9 | 244 |
Sandwich Sam | 6 | 5 | 28 |
C-3PX2 | 1 | 0 | 6 |
Jaden | 1 | 0 | 3 |
VE TOTALS | 572 | 404 | 2811 |
The Vast Empire scored above its weight in total points. Of the 6348.5 Imperial points scored, VE contribued 44.27% of the total despite there being four imperial factions, and despite the fact that only seven members participated with full-time participation from only three. These facts alone are impressive and may well provide solaced in the future for those who fought for the Subterrel Sector, but were unable to win the battle for the Empire.
