The Skill[edit]

The only way that any sentient being has of defining the world around him, her or itself is through the use of the senses it has - this has been true since the dawn of life itself. In survival, this is very important, as it is impossible for you to defend yourself from a threat if you do not even know that it is there. This is never more true than in warfare, and ever since the first predator crouched in some bushes to find concealment, there has been a need to be able to quickly locate threats.

In Space Combat, detection is more important than ever, since with the use of missiles and magnetic accelerators it is possible to engage an opponent from beyond visual range! An ongoing arms race between stealth and detection technology has existed for countless thousands of years, and as a member of the Starfighter Corps, you will rely on your eyes, on your scanners and on your knowledge of detection to be able to find your foe before it's too late.
A pilot skilled in detection will locate the enemy first, be able to defeat stealth technology through use of sophisticated scanners and knowing exactly what to look for, and therefore have a crucial advantage over a foe. The person whom sees the enemy first almost always gets to fire the first shot, and every pilot has good reason to learn the skills involved with the art of detection.

You can't kill what you can't see - and the enemy knows it! If you can't find your enemy, you are completely at his mercy!

Specialisation Mission: "I can't see him!"[edit]

Some natural phenomena, like Nebula, can play havoc with even advanced sensors.

After a week of attending lectures at the Imperial Academy, studying source material and practising your observation skills in simulation, you are ready for the first true test to your new-found observation skills. In a simulated mission during which you pilot your assigned starfighter, you are to Locate and destroy two Y-Wing Starfighters in a debris field in no less than 10 minutes. As your scanners are showing multiple signals that might be the Y-Wings, you will need to use your visual observation techniques to spot which targets are the real ones.

Qualification Mission: "But how could they be jamming us...?"[edit]

You have just finished an advanced course at the Academy, studying advanced stealth technology and how to defeat it, as well as sensor technology in general. It is time to test your skills. In a simulated mission during which you pilot your assigned starfighter, you are to Locate and destroy a VIP A-Wing in less than 10 minutes. There are four A-Wings in the simulation and each 'fake' one you destroy is a mark against you. A-Wings have sophisticated Jamming technology that you will have to overcome in order to find out which craft is your real target.

Skill Equipment: Long-Range Sensors[edit]

An advanced sensor screen, with far higher definition.

Normally TIE craft rely on their mother ship for sensor data, but as a Scout you have proven you can get the best use out of sophisticated (and expensive) sensor technology. You may be granted an advanced sensor package that not only doubles your scanning range, but enables you to overcome jamming packages and scan for heat emissions, electrical activity and life-signs as well as standard radar scanning, enabling you to combat jamming.

Naval Certifications[edit]

Once you have Qualified in Detection, you are one step closer to being able to complete the following Certifications:

  • Tactical Scout Pilot Able to avoid enemy fire and detect the enemy long before they are detected, Tactical Scouts are almost impossible to pin down and destroy.
  • Strategic Reconnaissance Pilot Masters of both detection and remaining hidden, Strategic Reconnaissance Pilots can infiltrate any location and escape undetected.
