The Skill: Ground Attack[edit]

Ground Attack is the art of attacking a ground based target from the sky, and has been used from the very first moment an avian predator decided to swoop on a tasty herbivore far below. Original aerial craft could only mount grenades and machine guns, and were forced to dive right down at their target to bring their guns in line. Ground Attack has since evolved to make use of such dreaded weapons as thermal detonators, proton bombs and orbital mines, and such tactics as carpet bombing, suppressive bombardment and strafing.

Ground Attack techniques were considered a vital part of warfare by the Galactic Empire, and as a result the TIE Bomber was the second most numerous fighter craft in the Imperial Starfighter Corps, second only to the ubiquitous TIE Fighter in quantity. It also mounted more ordnance than any fighter before it, with enough firepower to directly threaten even a Star Destroyer. Training its bomber pilots extensively, the Empire called on its Ground Attack specialists whenever something absolutely had to be destroyed.

When the TIE Bombers started shelling Yavin 4, I thought the planet would crack right open. Those egg layers levelled the jungle.

Specialisation Mission: "We’re starting our attack run."[edit]

After a week of hard training and simulation, you will attempt to prove you have become proficient in strafing by taking part in a simulated mission against three AT-ST scout walkers whilst piloting your assigned Starfighter. You will receive sensor information and guidance from a nearby Strike Medium Cruiser, which is assumed to be your mothership. Your objective is simple: Using your knowledge of ground attack learned through the resources supplied in this page, destroy all three AT-ST walkers within two minutes.
VENA Instructors will be looking for believable storytelling and proof that you have learned the basics of ground attack in Starfighter Combat.

Qualification Mission: "One shot is all I need."[edit]

After extensive training and real-combat practise in evasion, you are ready to prove you have learned bombing techniques to a higher degree. In a simulated mission, you will engage a CR-90 Corvette in combat using your assigned Starfighter (with two Proton Bombs instead of your missiles). Using your knowledge and experience in Ground Attack you perform an attack run against the CR-90 Corvette and destroy it by locating and targeting a weak point.
VENA Instructors will be looking for highly realistic storytelling and proof that you have achieved a high degree of proficiency in the use of ground attack in Starfighter Combat.

Skill Equipment: Proton Rockets[edit]

A pair of deadly Proton Rockets in flight.

The Proton Rocket is the most destructive warhead that a Starfighter can conceivably mount, packing three times the firepower of a Proton Torpedo and capable of destroying a CR-90 Corellian Corvette with one or two well-placed rockets. This sheer killing power comes at a price, as Proton Rockets are larger than Proton Torpedoes, travel slower are capable of only the most rudimentary tracking, making them very difficult to use against moving targets, or at long ranges.

Naval Certifications[edit]

Once you have Qualified in Ground Attack, you are one step closer to being able to complete the following Certification:
Bomber Ace: Masters in the art of destruction, Bomber Aces know every munition in the galaxy, and know just where to aim to destroy capital ships, bases and more.
