Combat aboard ships involves a whole lot of tunnel fighting - seek whatever cover you can!

The Skill[edit]

Ever since there have been ships, there has been shipboard combat. Boarding actions at brutally close ranges and usually in the confines of tunnels, and with the ever-present danger of punching clean through the hull of the ship you're on and causing explosive decompression. Predictably, this requires an entirely new set of strategies and combat doctrines, as well as equipment and weaponry. Boarding actions are an entirely new branch of combat.

Those whom have mastered the intricacies of this deadly new arena are generally divided into two categories: Marines, which defend ships or conduct boarding actions as part of war, or Pirates, whom actively board ships in order to plunder them from their rightful owners. In the Vast Empire, the contingent of soldiers equipped and trained especially for this trying form of combat are known as the Imperial Marines, and are rival the Stormtrooper Corps in skill.

Imperial Marines are trained for tunnel-fighting, using ships against the enemy and even for fighting without gravity. Imperial Marines often specifically target artificial gravity generators in order to give themselves an advantage over their unprepared enemies.

I've seen pirates take a VSD apart in less than an hour. And I've seen Imperial Marines knock over a pirate base in half that time.

Certification Mission: "All hands, prepare to repel boarders!"[edit]

Estimated time until they're all dead? 1 minute, tops.

Your ship has been boarded by pirates, and even now the vicious combatants are moving throughout the ship! This is your time to prove you are ready to join the ranks of the Imperial Marines - take the fight right to the enemy and push them back off of our ship! You've got your DH-17 and the artificial gravity is out so it's your time to shine!

You objective is simple: Using your combat skills and equipment, join four Navy Crewmen and hold off a pirate squad of seven. Halfway through the battle, the artificial gravity will fail. You will need to work quickly in order to regain the initiaitve, and you'll need to keep your wits about you once the gravity fails. Instructors will be looking for an advanced understanding of the implications of shipboard combat, but of adaptability as you move seamlessly from fighting on the ground to fighting whilst floating in the air.

Skill Equipment: Navy Commando Armour + FC-1 Flechette Launcher[edit]

Navy Commando Armour provides a balance between protection and agility.

Navy Commando armour is based on Imperial Stormtrooper armour, but holds an improved oxygen supply that allows a trooper to survive in the vacuum of space for twice as long, and has additional mobility provided at the cost of some protection - unlike Stormtroopers, you can actually sit down without difficulty.

You are also granted a Golan Arms FC-1 Flechette Launcher, which fires groups of anti-personnel flechettes with high killing power at short ranges. It is also able to deploy proximity fragmentation grenades for extra killing power. Although it can punch through Stormtrooper armour at short ranges, it is in no danger of penetrating a ship's hull. A brutal weapon.

Naval Certifications[edit]

You are now Certified as an Imperial Marine, the highest tier of proficiency for anyone seeking to fight off-planet. There is no higher pinnacle to rise to in this field of expertise - you can count yourself as one of the best.

By combining this with the highly controversial Unconventional Operations Pilot Certification, you become...okay, let's face it. You're pretty much Special Operations by this stage, a true Commando, and VENI or Strill will be contacting you shortly, if they haven't already.

By combining this with the HAZOP Specialist Certification, you are the ultimate ship-to-ship combatant, able to jump out into space, cut a hole in the side of an enemy ship and then wreak havoc. You could probably take down a Spacetrooper in a fair fight.
