The Skill[edit]

In space, possibly the most inhospitable human environment possible, we rely on some of the most complex technology ever designed to protect us from its ravaging effects. Engines allow us to move, life support gives us air to breathe, artificial gravity keeps our feet on the ground and the hull provides a physical barrier against the low pressure and deadly lack of oxygen that space holds. So what do we do when the unimaginable happens, and one of these complex, fragile devices fails?

This problem is all too real in warfare, where ion, laser and missile strikes fly all around. Your fighter will be hit, your capital ship will take damage, and if things go bad, you won't have much time to fix it before it is far too late - especially as you'll often have to do so from the exterior of the ship, or when it is bleeding atmosphere. The Vast Empire Naval Academy offers a course on emergency repair, based on the Damage Control program.

Emergency Mechanics are the people with the training and skill to make emergency repairs in the middle of battle, and can be found in any branch of the Vast Empire Navy. These skilled and daring individuals are the mechanical version of the Combat Medic, able to race to the scene and restore order asap.

Most pilots panic when they take a bad hit, and eject, but if you know your ship and keep a cool head, there's a chance you can stay in the fight.

Certification Mission: "I can hold her!"[edit]

Droids are often used in repairs, but you can't fit one in a TIE Fighter.

You have studied the specifics of repairs, with an emphasis on quick, temporary 'first aid' solutions that will restore equipment to working order for long enough to finish the fight and get safely to a proper repair facility, and you've learned how to operate in inhospitable conditions. Now, it is time to combine those skills in a high-stress situation - a simulated test in which the equipment you are assigned to fails.

FOR THOSE IN THE STARFIGHTER CORPS: In this mission, your fighter will take a bad hit, and go completely offline. Your reactor is starting to overload, and you only have a few minutes to find a way to keep it from exploding! Instructors will be looking for intimate knowledge of your fighter, quick thinking, and compelling storytelling

FOR THOSE IN FLEET COMMAND: In this mission, your ship takes a bad hit - the hull has been breached, and your station is losing atmosphere. You must find a way to stop the decompression before it kills everyone in the room and destroys your station! Instructors will be looking for intimate knowledge of your gun, engine, shield (etc) and quick thinking, as well as compelling storytelling.

Skill Equipment: HAZOP ARMOUR (Mechanic Version)![edit]

With HAZOP Armour, The answer is always "No Problem!"

HAZOP Armour is the most advanced and expensive equipment that a member of the Vast Empire Navy can wear. It is composed of hundreds of different ceramics, metals and alloys in a layered, composite pattern in order to protect you from every conceivable threat, and also includes servomotors that will amplify your physical strength and sensors to identify hazards.

This armour is based on the now defunct Dark Trooper Project, and it is closer to an actual droid than an exoskeleton. The "Mechanic Version" comes with a built-in repair toolkit and an advanced survival kit already built-in, and will allow you to survive almost any environment. Be careful, though - your version is slightly cut-down from the original, and not equipped for Zero-G use!

Naval Certifications[edit]

You are now Certified as an Emergency Mechanic, the highest tier of proficiency for quick-thinking problem solvers. You can't get any better in this field - you're now one of the best.

By combining this with the Combat Medic Certification, you can basically fix anything. People or equipment alike - you're Bob the Builder IN SPAAAAACE.

By combining this with any Starfighter Corps Certification, you become that much harder to take down in battle, able to recover from hits that would render anyone else's craft completely useless.
