The Skill: Targeting[edit]

Targeting is, at its core, one of the very basics of Starfighter Combat - it is the art of ensuring that when you fire your Starfighter's weapons, they will successfully hit the enemy you are attempting to damage. In the earliest days of pre-space fighter combat, pilots had to aim their guns purely by eye. Thankfully, those days are over, and fighter pilots have access to highly sophisticated targeting computers to assist them in identifying, targeting and eventually destroying hostile Starfighters. Still, targeting computers are not able to do everything for you.

Basic operation of a targeting computer is taught to every Starfighter pilot during training, but to become truly proficient in it, one must learn how to get the best out of the machine, and how to aim in Starfighter Combat if your targeting computer fails. Targeting skills involve training in rangefinding, angles of deflection, trajectory management and missile locking systems, and a pilot truly skilled at targeting will be able to land shots that seem impossible - even for a computer! Many believe that Luke Skywalker is a natural in the art of targeting, and that the shot that destroyed the Death Star was the finest example of this skill in use to date.

Filling space with energy weapons and projectiles of all kinds may look pretty to you, but it's a waste of time and power. It'll also get you shot down 99.9% of the time. Pick your targets, ladies and gentlemen. Then shoot your targets.

In a simulated mission, you will engage a highly skilled A-Wing pilot in combat using your assigned Starfighter. Using your knowledge and experience in targeting, you will use a combination of prediction, basic targeting techniques and your targeting computer to destroy the A-Wing within two minutes.
VENA Instructors will be looking for highly realistic storytelling and proof that you have achieved a high degree of proficiency in the use of targeting in Starfighter Combat.

Skill Equipment: Advanced Targeting Computer[edit]

An evolution of the advanced system field-tested by Lord Darth Vader, the Advanced Targeting Computer is a radical improvement over mass-produced models, and has a higher resolution, refresh rate, ECM resistance and range than standard models - it is the Starfighter equivalent of a sniper scope.

Naval Certifications[edit]

Once you have Qualified in Targeting, you are one step closer to being able to complete the following Certifications:
Elite Starbomber Pilot: Able to target and destroy both immobile and agile targets with ease, the Bomber Ace is a master of destruction on a massive scale.
Elite Starfighter Pilot: Elite fighter pilots whom combine amazing aerial acrobatics with pinpoint accuracy, turning them into killing machine in fighter vs. fighter combat.
