WORD REQUIREMENTS
As you can see, each skill you take requires exactly 200 more words than the last skill you trained in of the same tier did. This is to keep things challenging, and as you grow more confident and experienced as a writer in the Vast Empire, the easier it will be to add more detail and description to your stories. In every case, once you complete a skill story, you must wait until a 'Navy Main' story has passed, and you have participated in it, before you may attempt another skill.

HOW TO TAKE YOUR SKILL MISSION
Once you have studied the course material and you have written a story that both demonstrates you(and your character) have learned the knowledge and can apply it, and once your story has met the word requirements, go to the Naval Certifications Forum and start a new topic, with your Callsign and the title of the Mission you are attempting as the topic title. Post your story in there, then post on the Skill Report Thread so Instructors know there is a skill that needs to be graded.

BEING GRADED ON SKILLS
If the Training Officer decides that your attempt to gain a new skill does not properly demonstrate that you have learned it, you can make another attempt at completing it. You will be given two more chances to pass after your first 'did not pass' mark before you will have to wait for another story. Failing three times in a row means that you have used up your 'downtime' in between missions, and will have to wait for another story to pass before you may try again - or abandon the skill entirely and try for a new one.

TAKING MULTIPLE SKILLS
You may choose to attempt the next tier of a skill tree you have already started, or you may choose to start out on a whole new skill - there is no requirement that forces you to remain on the one 'skill set' until you complete it - you might want to gain as many as five or even a dozen Tier 1 skills before you even consider becoming Qualified in any of them, and as long as you do each in between main stories, there is nothing stopping you!

SKILLS FROM OTHER BRANCHES
You may only take skills from two sources: Those associated with the Branch of the VEN you are currently assigned to (Starfighter Corps or Fleet Command) and the General Skills, which any member of the Navy can learn. The only exception to this are Unconventional Operations Pilots, whom are permitted to take skills from a third, classified source.
