New Republic

The BTL-H2 Y-Wing Heavy Bomber was originally designed as a retrofit program for existing craft, but later turned into a new production model in its own right.

Characteristics[edit]

This retrofit of the aging Y-wing bomber was designed due to the need of a heavily armored strike bomber. Based on the BTL-A4 assault model, it is more heavily armed and has additional propulsion capabilities than the standard BTL-S3 model most commonly found throughout the galaxy.

The B-Wing Bomber was designed to become the New Republic's replacement to the Y-wing, offering more weapons, strong shields and faster speeds, which allowed it to excel at devastating attacks against large Imperial capital ships during the Civil War. The main drawback to the B-wing was that while it was stronger armored than the Y-wing, it was incredibly more difficult to fly, which left a lot of pilots relying on its robust shields to compensate for ungainly maneuvering. This worked well in en masse large battles, but not so much when enemy pilots could commit to an individual target.

The K-wing proved far better at surviving smaller campaigns against seasoned pilots, thanks to its heavy armor and strong shield generators, but K-wings were limited in quantities and were expensive to produce. However, the New Republic still had many Y-wings in reserve, featuring decent shields and strong armored hulls. The only drawback to using the original Y-wing was that it was the slowest bomber out of the three, which prompted a retrofit to attach supercharger engines replacing the original nacelle engines. These new Y-wings still flew at their original speed for normal flight, but now had the ability of additional power to engines to keep up with the fast moving E-wings and Defender starfighters.

Origins[edit]

The Y-Wing Heavy Bomber was originally designed by Burntstrobe for the Empire at War: Forces of Corruption mod Yuuzhan Vong at War.
