Appearance[edit]

Caldaris is of average height and is generally attractive, despite being a little rough around the egdes. His hair is always just ever so slightly unkempt and, even in the nicest clothes, he manages to ruffle them up a bit. He has a goatee that flares out from beneath his lower lip and proceeds wildly down to his chin. His eyes are an extremely light blue and quite often shine with optimism.

Personality[edit]

Always one to see the best of a bad situation, Caldaris believes in going with the flow. He generally carries a playful expression, although he grows quite serious when the need arises. He loves to joke around and tends to use this habit to avoid talking about himself. He is, however, fiercely loyal and extremely respectful of others, especially his superiors. He wants to make something of his life and he wants to do it the right way.

History[edit]

Caldaris, grew up with a single parent, his mother Sendii. They scraped by on what work his mother could find, living in a hovel on Palanhi and often commuting to the Bilbringi system so that she could work on the Imperial ships being built there. With no other parent to take care of him, Caldaris would often need to go with her to the shipyards. He would watch his mother secure bolts and fuse wiring for the new additions to the Imperial fleet. With more than enough free time, he quickly developed an interest in engineering and would experiment with spare parts he could find around the work docks.

When Caldaris turned 11, his birthday present was a run-down class five repair droid. His mother had been saving for years. Over the next few years he continued to learn about how starships worked and eventually got a part-time job in the Bilbringi shipyards as a transport pilot. When he wasn't delivering components he would pass the time by fiddling with his shuttle's internals or even sneaking out for joy rides around the shipyard. At this point the Rebels had destroyed the Emperor's Death Star over Yavin IV and the Imperial presence in the Bilbringi shipyards was quickly dying out, leaving little work to be done.

Caldaris's mother stopped getting regular work and he moved back to Palanhi to be with her. Out of work and with virtually no money, Caldaris entered the world of underground swoop racing and began betting on himself in the races. He was a natural swoop pilot because of all the practice he had from Bilbringi and managed to support himself and his mother for a long time doing this.

Once a year, questionable figures from all over Palanhi would gather for the Fakir 10-9-4 Rally, a huge swoop race where all the best pilots on the planet would compete for a huge winner's pot. When Cal turned 20, he confidently entered himself into the event, betting most of what he and his mother had on himself. On the final lap of the race, Cal was in second place and executed a desperate move to pull ahead, attempting to jump a large chasm. He barely made it and the front-left control vane of his swoop broke off and sent him into a violent spin. He was thrown off and most of the skin and muscle on his left arm was torn apart, breaking his fall.

Now completely poor and extremely injured, Caldaris was filled with shame. His mother was understanding, though, and told him that she was proud that he had the courage to risk so much for her. Once his left arm had moderately recovered, Caldaris realized that he needed to find a more stable way to provide for his family. Some of the local swoop pilots had disappeared over the last few years, apparently having joined up with the Vast Empire faction, based directly rimward of Palanhi. Caldaris talked to a friend and within a month he had applied to be a starfighter pilot for the Vast Empire Navy. With a final goodbye to his mother, he promised that things would get better. For both of them.
