Usage

The Procursator-class Light Cruiser is a capital ship class used by the Galactic Empire. It is a heavily armed vessel platform designed to transport troops and vehicles into active combat zones. It is a design developed by both Kuat Drive Yards and Sienar Fleet Systems in a rare collaborative effort to fill a need by the Empire.

The name is Latin for "skirmisher/forward-runner."

Background[edit]

With the Imperial fleet scattered and on the defensive at the Battle of Endor, order could not be maintained in many sectors of the Empire. Many insurrections had to be put down and New Republic assaults on otherwise loyal worlds meant that rapid reaction forced needed to be delivered quickly to worlds in conflict.

The institutional reliance on large capital ships, such as massive Star Destroyer fleets orbiting key worlds, were ill-suited for these operational situations. That said, traditional cruisers were built for all-mission capable roles which, frankly, made them ill-suited for any mission. A new class of ship was ordered; one that fit the following criteria:

  1. cheap and fast mass construction
  2. a relatively small crew
  3. large troop carrying capacity
  4. fast Hyperspace and realspace capabilities
  5. suitability for bombing and ground support missions
  6. a noticeably Imperial (dagger-shaped) design

Characteristics[edit]

The joint project between Kuat Drive Yards and Sienar Fleet Systems played on both of their strengths in large capital ships and specialized mission design. Aside from being a heavily modernized and smaller update of the Imperator Star Destroyer frame, the Procursator design is notable in its lack of a primary hangar. Instead a small shuttle hangar remains, with the saved space set aside for troop and vehicle storage.

This does create a bottleneck in coordinating shuttle entry and departure missions, and a well-trained flight operations team is key to flight operations on the vessel.

Armament[edit]

An additional limitation to the Procursator platform is the limited ability of the ship to defend itself in ship-to-ship action against comparably sized vessels.

The armament package was designed for bombing and ground support missions, with the ability for self defense against starfighters if not other capital ships. The fire control systems, while state-of-the-art, are limited by the emplacement of the primary weapons systems of the ship, which concentrate turbolaser emplacements almost exclusively on the dorsal section of the ships.

Point defense blaster cannon and a heavy all-purpose launcher capable of interdicting incoming warheads provide limited defense of the rest of the ship.

In addition, ion weaponry was omitted completely from the original design as such armament are essentially useless in ground support operations. Some factions have chosen to replace some hard points with these weapons.

History[edit]

Initial deployment by the Vast Empire Imperial Navy Fourteenth Fleet began in 10 ABY.
