Mechanics versus Organics

Many writing teachers make a distinction between what they call "Technique," and what they call "Style." The craft of composing prose requires straightforward skills which are sometimes collectively called Technique; I call these skills the "Mechanics" of writing. The art of writing fiction requires subtler skills which are sometimes collectively called Style; I call these skills the "Organics" of writing.
