Star Wars Calendar

Introduction[edit]

The calendar employed throughout most of the Galaxy is based on the size and rotation of the planet Coruscant. Although the Vast Empire certainly does not have control of Coruscant (currently), it aspires to with each coreward push, and it's far simpler than converted the dates in every single record they have.

Measurement of Time Units[edit]

  • The standard unit of time was the standard second.
  • Sixty standard seconds made up each standard minute.
  • Sixty minutes made up each standard hour.
  • Each standard day consisted of 24 standard hours.
  • A standard week was 5 standard days, and each month was seven weeks. (Making 35 standard days each month.)
  • A standard year was 368 days, composed of ten months, three fete weeks, and three holidays.

Naming Conventions[edit]

Designating Years[edit]

A good majority of the Galaxy employs the Battle of Yavin for distinguishing years from each other. The Vast Empire however does not see this as a worthy date, and instead employs something along the lines of their own founding. Since this occurred in 1 ABY, it was a simple measure of declaring that to be "Year One" rather than "Year Zero" so that confusion would largely be avoided.

Holidays[edit]

Tapani Sector Holidays[edit]

  • Expansion Week came just before the upper class Capital Season. It fell between the months of Selona and Telona.

Harvest Day was first observed by the original settlers of the sector. The exact origins of the holiday are have been lost over time, but it was believed that the settlers traditionally commemorated the time of harvesting their crops on this day. In later years, it was simply a day off from work. Harvest Day fell between the months of Yelona and Relona on the Tapani local calendar.

Productivity Day fell between the months of Nelona and Helona.

  • Shelova Week was a traditional Herglic holiday that celebrated commerce and family, two things which are interrelated to the Herglic race. Shelova Week was a time to exchange gifts, make new business alliances, discuss trade arrangements, and spend time with family members. As the Human population of Tapani Sector began interacting with the Herglics, they too began celebrating the holiday, although many Humans simply take vacation instead of also developing business partnerships. On the Tapani local calendar, Shelova Week fell between the months of Helona and Melona.
  • Vast Imperial Day is held annually just after the month of Kelona, and before the month of Selona. It is the VE's replacement of Tapani Day. It is treated as a day if memorial towards the great people who gave their lives for the Empire.
  • Winter Fete was a holiday which originally marked the winter equinox on the planet Pelagon. The settlers there were the first to celebrate Winter Fete, and when they began settling other planets in the sector, the holiday went with them. Over time, the holiday was modified to coincide with Coruscant's Fete Week. In the Galactic Civil War-era Tapani local calendar, Winter Fete fell on the very last week of the year, following the month of Welona.

Other Holidays[edit]

  • Carnival Week, a patriotic Imperial holiday on Coruscant. The Vast Empire still carries on this holiday on Lotaith.
  • Empire Day, annual event celebrating the foundation of the Galactic Empire, taking place on the 23rd day of Nelona (5th month).
  • Week of Founding, celebrated annually in the second week of Nelona (5th month) in celebration of the Vast Empire's founding.
  • Tadath Day, annually celebrated in remembrance of the repulsion of Thrawns attempted invasion of the planet during the ESC of 2009.

Other Notes[edit]

  • As the Hyperdrive Theory allowed space travelers to bypass relativity, a single duration of time passed at all locations equally over a given interval. Relativity is essentially ignored except in extremely rare and specific cases (of which none currently exist).
  • The year of 0 ABY and 0 BBY are of unusual note. They are actually the same year despite common misconceptions. 0 BBY refers to the first part of the year, whereas 0 ABY refers to the second part. This does mean that the Battle of Yavin is not employed as the "New Year" in this system. Instead the Treaty of Coruscant is, which occurred 3,653 years before the Battle of Yavin.
