An over-two-meter, red-eyed, reptilian humanoid with several rows of needle-sharp fangs and covered with protective black scales, Baraduk was a frightening sight to many of his enemies. The keratin, horny scales were not only deterrent, but practical: They protected him from physical damage and from most forms of radiation.

History

Early History

Born on Barab I in 20 BBY, Zal Baraduk was the first hatchling of Saba Baraduk and older hatchmate of the Bounty hunter known simply as Baraduk. As a Barabel, Zal was raised in a harsh environment - living in caves during the six daylight hours and going out hunting in the cold during the dark hours. Due to the torrential rains being as sporadic as they are, Zal often found himself separated from his hatchmate and mother, sometimes for days on end. It was during one of these separations that Zal encountered a Durgolosk, a fearsome predator native to Barab I. Zal managed to wound the beast before fleeing - normally a 10 year old Barabel would be no match for a Durgolosk, but Zal was cunning, agile and strong - more so than the average member of his species. The Durgolosk pursued him, however, back to his cave. He and his brother took the wounded Durgolosk down, Zal delivering the killing blow. This earned them both a lot of fame on Barab, Zal slightly more so than his brother. This caused Zal's brother to resent him, and a competitive nature grew between them.

At the rise of the Galactic Empire, the Planetary Safaris company began to hunt down Barabels on Barab I, funded by said Empire. It was during 0ABY that Zal's mother was killed by one of the Planetary Safaris' clients. This spurred Zal's younger hatchmate into a rage, setting off to avenge their mother. Zal tried to stop him - being older and more mature than his brother - but this only exacerbated the situation. Zal's younger brother was captured by slavers and sent to Herios V.

Zal showed no grief, but was torn inside - torn between staying an protecting his people or going off on a journey of vengeance. He chose the former, but a year before the Navy Captain known as Alater shut down the Planetary Safaris company, Zal was chased from his home. He killed six of the hunting party and was branded a fugitive. It was then he ran into another Barabel known as Vangar, a wealthy 'businessman'. Zal signed on with Vangar as a way of getting off-planet. The two grew close and they formed an agreement - Vangar would handle the normal business while Zal would work as a bounty hunter/enforcer/bodyguard for Vangar.

Aboard Vangar's ship, an Assassin Corvette called 'Barab's Claw', their agreement grew. Over time, Zal did almost one hundred various jobs as a bounty hunter, earning a fearsome reputation, but remaining out of the spotlight for the most part. Eventually they had no less than 8 bounty hunters in their service. Zal Baraduk became Vangar's second in command and Chief of Security, taking odd jobs but for the most part looking after the administrative duties of the bounty hunting area.

In 9BBY Vangar died, killed when they were boarded by Rebel soldiers. Eventually, the mostly-Barabel crew slaughtered the Rebels, but for Baraduk this meant war. He took Vangar's ship - now his ship - and waged a pirate's war against the New Republic. Eventually, in 10ABY, he stumbled onto a conflict between the Vast Empire and the New Republic. Baraduk attacked the Rebel ship from the left, taking out its shields and paving the way for its destruction by the larger VE ship.

The Vast Imperial ship did indeed destroy but instead of thanking Zal for his efforts, declared him under arrest for piracy. Knowing his ship was no match for an Imperial Star Destroyer at this range, Zal had no choice but to agree to their demands - he would join the VE and his ship would remain his, but he would be forced to serve in the Stormtrooper Corps. In the meantime his ship would serve the Vast Empire in a minor capacity. When he eventually left the Vast Empire, the ship would be returned to him.. or so they say.
