Elements of the Navy[edit]

Starfighter Corps[edit]

The smallest units of the VE Navy are generally short-ranged space superiority fighters, such as the TIE series. These were small craft, with only one pilot, and in days gone by they lacked shields and hyperdrives. Imperial doctrine during the days of the Empire focused on individual pilots being expendable, mass producing starfighters and pilots to overpower the enemy with sheer mass and overwhelming numbers. When the Vast Empire formed after the fall of the Emperor, this doctrine was reversed, placing greater importance on pilots and the fighters they wielded. Most starfighters found in the VE Navy today now come with shields, and a few custom or modified fighters even include hyperdrives and missiles.

Though the design of the basic TIE fighter has been adapted several times over, most of the newer designs still revolve around the basics of the original; The distinctive ball cockpit, engines mounted rear to the pilot, pylons that extend out from the cockpit. 'TIE' stands for Twin Ion Engines, which allows the fighters greater speed and maneuvering. The first TIEs that came out of Sienar Fleet Systems were the standard TIE Fighter, with their hexagonal straight wings and duel blaster cannons under the canopy or viewport. Since then, several TIE variants have been produced and deployed across the galaxy.

Whilst the Vast Empire mainly utilizes the this series of starfighter, there were a few other types of craft that existed within the Imperial Navy. For a more comprehensive look at Imperial starfighters, visit the Naval Starfighters section.

Everyone who joins the Navy begins with placement in on of the many squadrons that the Vast Empire wields. Whilst it is possible to work your way up to command of a ship, that path is long and difficult, so the majority of navy members exist within the fighter squadrons.

These squadrons provide a crucial service for the fleet, acting as escorts for the larger capital ships, patrolling VE space, and engaging enemy fighters in combat.

The Fleet[edit]

Any fleet, whether it be rebel or imperial, utilises capital ships. Without these ships there would be no fleet, and without a fleet, there would be no Empire. Capital ships come in varying shapes and sizes, from corvettes and frigates, to destroyers and battleships. There are also several other classes of ship, such as logistical vessels, cargo ships, and army dropships.

A typical fleet would include dozens of capital ships, with a basic composition of a few of the larger battlecruisers, along with several smaller 'escort' ships and support vessels. Though the Empire used all kinds of ships in it's fleet, the Imperial Navy would always be recognized by it's trademark design: the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer.

The Star Destroyer can trace it's roots back to the Clone Wars, functioning as a troop dropship or a fighter-carrier, with later variants serving as ships of the line that went toe to toe with their Confederate counterparts. Although these earlier models lacked the heavy firepower that would come to be a major factor in a typical Star Destroyer designs, it paved the way for the future of the class.

With the collapse of the empire, and the splintering of the Imperial navy, ships like the Star Destroyer, and the infamous 'Super' variants, are highly coveted and in short supply. The ever fractious Galactic Civil War has seen many destroyed or captured, whilst the remainders are continuously being divided up amongst the various splinter factions, and even the New Republic. Here at the VE, there exist only a handful of such ships, which are spread out amongst the VE Navy.
