Dunny's Service History[edit]
Academy Trainee[edit]
Sam Dunn was put through the Vast Empire’s testing and qualification system, and was rejected outright for his lack of any formal education. However, the recruiter ran Sam through the physical and mental testing anyway, and though his numeracy and computer literacy were unsurprisingly cripplingly low, his reflexes, prediction and mental fortitude were extremely high, as was his physical tolerance.
The SFC saw his potential, and approached him with an offer: If he signed a contract to serve the Vast Empire for a full four years, they would pay for enough education to bring him up to the minimum standard required to join. It was an incredible opportunity to do better for himself – he could go from being a detective on a prison colony to a member of the finest military force in the galaxy. He accepted with gratitude.
In the Imperial Academy, he proved himself to be an intuitive, if unorthodox pilot, skilled in the cockpit of high-speed craft like Interceptors and Scouts, but poor when inside slower-moving craft like bombers and transports. As he had to study basic mathematics and computers as well as his academy training, Dunn did not have time to make friends with his fellow trainees – he worked as hard as he could to make the grade.
It was this, far more than the mass of qualifications he had assembled during what little spare time he had or his simulator scores, that earned him the Star of the Academy medal. His unprecedented scores on the final simulated exam not only assisted the VEN with updating their training program, but earned him the Merit Cross, 1st Class. Sam Dunn remains to this day the only individual in the history of the Vast Empire Navy to have earned this award prior to graduating from the Naval Academy. He also skipped the rank of Leading Crewman entirely and was promoted to Senior Crewman, and assigned to Regents Squadron - known for their internal drama, and unequalled combat record.

Regent Flight Member[edit]
Sam Jack Dunn never got to properly meet the people of Regents Squadron - on his way to his new billet, Operation Snatch & Grab started, and he had to scramble to his assigned Interceptor - Beta 4. Reaching it before the rest of the Squadron got to their fighters, he actually never saw any of them face-to-face. His first combat mission was a lightning raid on a pirate base - he was assigned to destroy the enemy's fighter escort.
The operation did not go as planned, however, with a squadron of B-Wing Bombers belonging to the New Republic joining the fight and robbing the Imperials of the initiative. Sam was responsible for disabling the overpowered shields of at least five Y-TIE Bombers, and saved the life of Vanity Morukuv, who would go on to become the Squadron Commander of the unit shortly after the battle. During the battle, he also earned his first kill, and ignored orders in order to rescue the stranded commander of Reprisal Squadron. Vanity saved his own life in turn during the fighting, returning the favour. He was promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class, and awarded the Merit Cross 1st Class (again) for saving Reprisal Squadron's leader.
Just after Operation Snatch & Grab, Sam Dunn found himself in the middle of a heated dispute between members of the Starfighter Corps and Naval Command. He mediated for the two sides, and helped to prevent what might have been a mutiny, and he was awarded the Naval Achievement Ribbon for great service to the Vast Empire Navy in a non-combat situation. A short time after this, Regents Squadron was re-shuffled, and Sam Dunn volunteered for a transfer to Nightshrike Squadron to help replace combat losses.

Nightshrike Flight Member[edit]
Sam Jack Dunn, in a stunning contrast to his short time in Regents Squadron, had plenty of time to get to know the members of Nightshrike out of combat, and yet was placed under military arrest before he could take part in a combat mission with them. Still injured from his previous mission with Regents, Sam was assigned to help the other new recruits to Nightshrike get settled in whilst he recovered, and met Flensor and Serpent, a pair of new Academy Graduates during this time. However, when Fyston, a more veteran member of Nightshrike, was assaulted by a squad of Imperial Stormtroopers, Sam leapt to the defence of his fellow Squadron Member, and urged his comrades to do the same. Though he acquitted himself well in the fighting, in the end he was court-martialled for inciting his fellow Squadron Members to assault other Imperial members, and had his wings stripped from him.
Stormtrooper Corps - Blackjack[edit]
Sam Dunn was approached by Major Havock of the Stormtrooper Corps, and offered a position within the elite ground forces of the Vast Empire. Choosing to accept her offer, he began Stormtrooper Training, having already been assigned to Blackjack Squad, recognized as the best of the best in the Empire. Sam Dunn has already been given the opportunity to field-test a new initiative: the assignment of Imperial Scout Troopers to line squads. After completing his training, Sam Dunn was assigned to Blackjack Squad as an attachment, and before he even had time to get to know the majority of the troopers (something that is typical for Sam), he was shipped out to the front, to fight on the ice planet Anteevy. The mission: Rescue an ARC squad that had become captured.
Sam Dunn's experience in Naval Intelligence served him well, and he managed to knife his way through a good portion of the underground base's defenders, who were very well-armed and well-trained. He even managed to take a Wookiee down in melee combat. Despite the mission's success, Sam Dunn suffered 60% burns, multiple broken bones, as well as major shock and trauma. His armour had to be surgically removed in an Imperial medical facility, along with his skin, and a whole new layer grafted on. Needless to say, Sam went straight from Anteevy to a medical facility, and remained there for quite a few months.
For his selfless heroism, courage under fire and exemplary performance in battle, Sam Dunn was awarded with the Crystal Ring of the Soldier, and the prestigious Imperial Gauntlet - the only soldier from the entire operation to receive such an award.

[edit]
It was revealed that Sam Dunn is involved with the Vast Empire's Naval Intelligence department when he woke up on a medcenter bed some time after, and was greeted by the director of VENI, a man codenamed Grey. It was Grey who had funded and overseen Sam Dunn's expensive medical reconstruction, not the Stormtrooper Corps, and the spymaster had taken the liberty of re-assigning Sam Dunn to the Navy for reasons known only to him. Sam Dunn is grateful to the man for having saved his life, and is fully aware that the debt will have to be repaid.
During the offensive against the Imperial Dominion, Sam Dunn was operating on the sidelines, using his TIE Phantom to eliminate fleeing craft ahead of the Imperial Fleet to ensure the element of surprise was maintained. He also deployed his own agents behind enemy lines, taking up a supervisory role for the first time as a member of the VENI.
Squadron Commander- The 50th TIE Interceptor Squadron[edit]
In the later stages of the offensive against the Imperial Dominion, Sam Dunn, along with fellow pilots Joamer and Maroy, drafted plans for reforms to the Starfighter Corps, noting a lack of flexibility among the current model. When they presented it to the Chief of Naval Warfare, Wyl Trykon, they were rewarded for their forward thinking and show of leading from the front by being placed in the newly formed 101st wing.
Sam Dunn was given the position of Squadron Commander of the 50th TIE Interceptor Squadron, nicknamed 'Chlovi'. He has proven, surprisingly, to be quite the taskmaster, instilling discipline into his new subordinates with intense drilling and combat exercises. He has made his intention of turning his Squadron into an elite force on par with the 181st and Rogue Squadron quite plain, but only time will tell if his ambition plan pays off.

COUNTERPUNCH: War[edit]
With only three days to train, and a last-minute member transfer of recruits due to fears of Bloodmoon's anti-alien weaponry, the 50th's first mission was a disaster. With little training, no time to gain any unit cohesion and, for many of the pilots, no prior combat experience, there was little chance that the 50th Squadron would achieve battlefield success, and things went badly indeed for the mostly green team.
Though they were able to eliminate a pair of TIE/ln Squadrons with little trouble, the 50th were engaged by the elite 128th Dominion Interceptor Squadron, and were taken apart by the veterans. Suffering around a 50% casualty rate, Sam Dunn lost his left leg in the conflict, and is currently in an Imperial Medcenter (again).
He has become a lot more quiet and withdrawn, and it is entirely possible that he has developed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or is simply suffering a severe state of psychological shock. Despite the disaster, his leadership and fearless rescue of Senior Crewman Elizabeth Fletcher earned him a slew of awards from High Command.

COUNTERPUNCH: Death[edit]
Shot down by Kal ‘Seeker’ Jaego in the final stages of the Battle of Bloodmoon, Sam Dunn suffered extensive physical and mental trauma from the terrible defeat, and spent the Battle of Sollamens grounded on the ‘’’ISD Adjudicator’’’ along with the majority of 50th Squadron. It would have been impossible for the man to pilot a TIE with his entire left leg blown off at the knee.
Though he was not able to participate in the battle in a combat role, Sam Dunn still volunteered to serve as a member of flight control, assigned to help co-ordinate Krakana Squadron (with whom he had spent some time training in the use of bombers). Due to his leg, he has been stripped of his wings, and was forced to resign from the position of Chlovi Squadron Commander – something he seems all too happy with.
He has been spending more time with the bomber pilots of Krakana Squadron than with his former subordinates in Chlovi, apparently flying in bomber simulators as part of his therapy programme. He has been assigned to Krakana Squadron as a reserve pilot whilst he awaits the arrival of a proper replacement for his leg.
