Economy
|
Shumogi's economy is based on two major elements: Imperial military investment and whatever profits can be scraped from the ground. The vital elements of life - food, water - are imported in quantities necessary for the population to survive. Any local production feeds the more remote communities but cannot sustain any large groups for very long.

Military
|
Shumogi is defended by local militia forces including units such as the 8th Grenadiers and the 103rd Territorial Lancers, backed up by Imperial forces of the 476th Mechanized Assault Group and the 577th Imperial Fighter Group.

History

Galactic Republic
Shumogi was originally destined for a Corusforming project as a potential colony world. If successful, it would have rivaled Corellia for regional dominance. Instead, while the atmosphere developed appropriately, neither flora or fauna succeeded as desired. Shumogi was considered a textbook failure of planetary transformation. Eventually, some small mining interests took notice of the deposits the world possessed and set up production facilities. Profits were meagers, however, and while the minerals were important, businesses could not justify the expense.
A coalition of Core worlds created the Core Mining Group, enlisting inmate labor (at reduced sentences) to assist in mining Shumogi's resources. Over time, CMG bought out its independent (and pre-existing) partners, and teamed with those inmates who stayed on the planet after their sentences were complete. The primary production facility of Varlud became the planetary capital, and the descendants of the prison labor force emerged as a genuine civilian population. Calling themselves "Shumes", a derogatory name given by the guards that originally meant either "shame", or "sorrow", they made a home of the desolate world.
In time, the easiest ore deposits were exhausted and CMG abruptly left the world. Mining continued, but now processing and production became locally controlled, eventually enhanced with contracts with offworld entities like Rothana Heavy Engineering, which required heavy vehicle production facilities far from the prying eyes of the major Core worlds.
In time, Shumogi because one of the primary military factory worlds for the Grand Army of the Republic throughout the Clone Wars, and the Imperial Army thereafter.
