Bio[edit]

Appearance[edit]

Cathal is of a slim, trim build that tends more to the athletic than muscle-bound. He's of average height with wiry muscles on him and with a confident stride, the sort you know can run you into the ground. He walks softly and quietly, a lifetime of habit making him move with exceptional care. The forestworlder's face has an open, friendly smile though his eyes seem to be constantly on the move, almost as if they're hunting for targets. There is a weather-beaten look about him despite his pale skin, at least it goes to show he's no spacer. His Basic is accented with a soft, lilting, sing-song accent.

Covering the top of his head is a reddish brown mop of hair, tending towards the darker side of things. His eyes are a soothing blue. On his right side there is the only major sign of scarring with some shrapnel scoring from his leg to shoulder, the legacy of a Rebel goodbye present while searching a hastily evacuated safehouse.

Personality[edit]

Any of his past reports all mark Cathal down as calm, solid, dependable. The one reprimand that can be put to him is a bit prone to using his own initiative as opposed to awaiting orders. Still, he's the sort who'll happily wait in an OP in constant rain while conducting surveillance. He's easy-going, mild-mannered and it takes a good bit to push him that it'll visibly affect him. When he snaps, it's not over something trivial.

His home service on Coillte and high scores in wilderness training have left him with a cocky side. Being the backwater it was, he's barely ever had to deal with the elite of the Rebellion. And on his home turf, he was usually guaranteed to be able to run rings around them. Trained, professional, opponents are definitely definitely guaranteed to be a shock to the system. That and unfamiliar terrain.

And that same innate skill that him near top of his class in the wilderness has a flip side of the coin. Cathal's comfortable "in the Green" as Coillteans call it. Mountains, trees, snow, he can handle. He was raised in it, he can move through it quieter than a summer breeze. What unnerves him are cities, artificial towering monstrosities that to his appalled eyes resemble an ant hive more than a settlement. In space, he's uncomfortable with metal around him, yearning for the feel of good solid soil beneath his feet. Wide open spaces, like the desert, a truly alien environment devoid of life, it's enough to make him quail.

Another note is his alien bias. While it isn't to the extreme of other xenophobes, it has been noted on his profile. Coillte is traditionally a human world and the inhabitants view the depredations of the Hutts and the multicultural Rebels as stemming from their origins. He can tolerate aliens but not much more. Even for their own species, the native Coillteans tend to view off-worlders a bit askance, not trusting them to have the same hardbitten crofter spirit.

History[edit]

Coillte by most worlds standards is a poor one. It's closer to the Rim than the Core and its primary economic activities consisting of timber and mineral exports mean it's low down on the pecking order when it comes to prestige too. A world that is neither a priority for the Empire nor the Rebellion. Because of its outlying nature, Coillte has traditionally been individualistic and outsiders are viewed with suspicion. Society is stratified between town and wilderness dwellers, with the former having more pretensions to civilisation and less likely to engage in blood-feuds or duels.

Traditionally society is divided into various clans or tribes with small endemic warfare the standard for most days. Imperial conquest and rule of Coillte has pacified the population to some extent but they can't police every outlying settlement and indigenous security forces tend to turn a blind eye more often than not. Frequently settled with knives, the aftermaths of such affairs of honour, aren't pretty.

The only attraction for off-worlders are the rich forests and mineral deposits present on Coillte's surface with the few Imperial facilities mostly geared around the mines and lumber camps. It's harsh work that take's its toll. Most of the labourers are native Coillteans while higher management and executives tend to be off-worlders.

Rebel activity in their system is restricted mostly to smuggling, piracy and sabotage of the logging and mining industry. Naturally this is viewed dimly on a world where it's the primary source of employment. Raised in a standard household, it was only fitting he follow in his father's footsteps. There is still some honour in warcraft. Cathal was an eager volunteer for the planetary security forces, consisting primarily of infantry with the odd specialist unit. Forestworlders tend to show an almost preternatural talent for stealth, most of the populace learning young the importance of silence when a predator is stalking you. He proved adept at the low-intensity warfare, scouting for Rebel drop zones and concealed landing sites. It was an easy adjustment for him, having hunted since he was a child, now it just meant the prey shot back.

Cathal proved himself adequate enough for the urban operations too in Coillte's urban areas. Aside from the odd bombing, mostly it was raiding the Hutt-controlled spice dens or carrying out house searches of suspected Rebel sympathisers. He also was able to get the odd stint off-world when the spaceside command required grunts to board smugglers or other illegal traders.

With Rebel activity having only gained momentum after Endor, Cathal was one of several individuals who volunteered to serve off-world and go into Imperial service. The Empire finally turning its attention to it's outlier worlds in its time of need, is receiving a mixed batch of bodies to reinforce it's worn down divisions. For Cathal it made infinite more sense to volunteer before he was conscripted.
