Garryll Gates
“ | The Platoon Sergeant was as tough as they came, and had survived a frankly ridiculous amount of fire during the defense of Tadath. Granted, he'd had a flamer, but it was still fairly amazing. | ” |
—Corvin Sarn, LCPL, of his then-ASL |

Personality:[edit]
A soldier very dutiful to the Corps and is willing to do whatever needs to be done in a mission. A humorous, but proud man, glad to be part of the Imperial Army and respectful toward his peers and COs. A brave and intelligent soldier. He's a good friend to men he's known for a while, and feels more open to people he can associate with.
Over his career, his personality has changed; once, he cracked jokes and wisecracks, and made light of situations. Now, he takes every mission seriously, and leads his squad and platoon by example. He has retained his courage and sense of duty, but is now less picky about the methods that must be undertaken to achieve victory.
History:[edit]
Detailed Overview (Canon for Gates)[edit]
See the story I will put up, "Behind the Visor"
(link to be provided)
Childhood[edit]
Born on Corellia during the Age of the Empire, he was the first son and only child of middle-class parents. His young years weren’t of major note; his parents went to work six or eight hours a day, they payed their taxes on time, and they had no marital troubles. They lived a boring, ho-hum life. The only things particularly special about them at all was their jobs; both of Garryll’s parents were Imperial officials, working in the Imperial embassy. They impressed upon their son a sense of duty and loyalty to the Empire, the Empire that protected them and provided them work, spanned the galaxy and served the people’s will.
Teen[edit]
Once Garryll hit high school, he hit a major growth spurt, becoming much taller and broader in a few years. Also, the school was highly acclaimed and was extremely worldly; charity and government groups alike were well-attended by the students. Garryll, motivated by his parents’ praise of the Empire, was drawn to the Imperial groups, like the Imperial ROTC and Junior Imperial Government clubs. After a long look at the opportunities at his school, he decided on the Imperial ROTC.
From his parents, he had learned service and loyalty. From the ROTC Stormtrooper mentors, he learned more practical skills, like shooting, tactics, first aid and discipline. All the time, he was given more and more reasons to join up as soon as he hit eighteen.
Only a few short months shy of his eighteenth birthday, tragedy struck. In a freak event, a terrorist group attacked the Imperial embassy his parents worked at. In the hostage crisis, the Imperial governor elected to respond with force, and deployed Stormtroopers to break the crisis open and get the civilians out. When the Stormtroopers were deployed, Gates’ mentor was amongst the first-response team that was tasked with blowing open the front doors and charging in to take down the terrorists. When the Stormtroopers closed in for the kill, though, the terrorsits activated explosives they’d placed across the building, turning the entire thing into a fireball, killing themselves, the hostages, and a large number of military personnel too slow to dodge the falling debris and fire.
Gates knew his parents were dead; they had not answered his calls and he knew they had gone to work that morning. He moved to help injured soldiers and bystanders, operating as he’d been taught in first-aid, but like an automaton, mechanically, in shock. At his friend’s call, though, he snapped from his stupor, only to see, in dismay, that his mentor (and his friend’s father) was dying.
The medics could not save him, but he had enough life in him to ask the two young men about their service to the Empire. When Gates answered immediately, the man made him promise to protect the Empire and its people, whatever the cost.
During the funeral service, he mourned openly, but when he had spent his tears, he dried his eyes and turned away from the caskets of the only family he’d known. After his best friend was finished his farewells, he pulled him aside, and promised:
I will avenge our families. I will find the people who did this and kill them.
Service[edit]
During his training, the Empire was still a coherent body. The Emperor was still alive, the fleet wasn’t scattered by warlords. In the years and months it took to become a fully competent Stormtrooper, though, the Emperor died and the Empire began to crumble. His training base continued to operate, but no new recruits came in. By the time he’d graduated, the Empire was a shadow of its former self, and there was no real place to deploy the newly minted Stormtroopers. They had to sit on their hands and wait for any Imperial transport to take them to a would-be Empire and give them orders; groups like the Thrawnists and Isard’s faction vied for dominance. The only ship that showed up, though, was the small, but influential Vast Empire.
The ship wasn’t exactly a Star Destroyer, more on the lines of a couple freighters sent to pickup any garrison left on the forgotten training moon and to clean up the garrison. Gates and his newly-promoted Stromtrooper peers helped the VE soldiers gather the remainder of what was useful and left. Their trip through space was uneventful, and the next planet Gates caught a glimpse of was Tadath.
Since his placement in a squad amongst the elite of the VE Stormtrooper Corps, Phoenix Company, he’s served with distinction, receiving a half-dozen promotions. His dress uniform is a crayon-box of medals and service ribbons, and his position has culminated as the Squad Leader of the Elite of the Elite, Blackjack squad.
Pirate[edit]
Participated in several raids, serves as Tanus "Lighthammer" Solvona's Underthing. Leads an ad-hoc Shock-trooper squad, the "Longcoats" for the trench coats they wear into battle.
Physical Features:[edit]
29 years old, standing at 6 feet and 3 inches, tall and lean, weighing 235 pounds. He has short, military short cropped hair, black. Fit; short, thin scar from a Noghori over his right eye. Prosthetic shoulder, lost during battle. Clean shaven and blue eyes with a long nose serve the man justice of an aristocrat that he never was. Almost always in uniform, his long arms and legs provide him with athleticism difficult to do with a smaller frame.
Traits:[edit]
A very good marksmen due to his head start training. Good with a rifle, better with a sniper rifle, and best with heavy weapons, he is still adept with every run-of-the-mill infantry weapon. Good hand-to-hand combat training. He trusts his officers explicitly, and is easily overridden by Commanding officers. However, he also displays a reckless streak the length of a Star Destroyer; he has been labeled as slightly unstable in combat, a blood-thirsty, trigger-happy pyromaniac. It has been theorized by several doctors it is his scarred teenage years, losing all three guardians in one fell swoop. This does not prevent him from serving, as his superiors and comrades consider him a capable soldier.
Outside of combat, he's an occasional smoker, full-time reckless, workaholic, occasionally obnoxious and some-time musical; he had learned the basics of playing the piano in his early childhood, but it ended when his antics drove the teacher crazy. He, lacking many interesting things to do, started teaching himself with a fair degree of ability.
Gear[edit]
- An old A-280 that's as old as his service record. Old, battered, but reliable, upgraded with more reliable barrel, grip, stock. The "automatic" selection has been scraped off at some time during his career, and has been replaced with "OMFG"
- "Master" Scope: A do-it-all scope that can be mounted on most weapons, equipped with Infrared, Night-vision, x4, x10 selections and thermal
- Trophy Warblade: 30-centimeter heavy steel, serrated on one back edge. Taken from a Thrawnist officer during the Siege of Tadath.
