Naval ID Line Overview[edit]

Hello, recruit. So, you're creating your Naval ID Line. Good for you. Your ID Line is something to take pride in: it identifies you as a member of the Vast Empire, a member of the Navy, and as a member of your unit, among other things. It is also a place where you can showcase your Exam Certifications and Awards and show everyone what you've accomplished in your time in the Vast Empire Navy.

All Vast Empire Navy members are required to use the ID Line system, as detailed below, in all official Naval correspondence for identification purposes. The use of ID Lines helps all of us quickly identify the author of a particular message or Newsletter submission, which is increasingly more important as the Fleet expands its membership. Consequently, the Naval Commander in Chief has established a standardized format (presented below) to maintain consistency within the Fleet.

Remember: You must place your ID line in your signature, so that it appears every time you post. You can do this by clicking Profile near the top of the ComNet page, scrolling down to the right section on the page it brings up, and pasting your ID line into that section. If you're in the Starfighter Corps, and assigned a position in the Gamma Flight of your squadron, take special care to use the special character Γ, and make sure it displays properly.

The following is the order of information to be used in a member's complete ID Line:

For members in the Starfighter Corps[edit]

[Position acronym]/[Rank acronym] [Callsign]/[Flight Designation]/S:[Squadron #] "[Squadron Name]"/W:[Wing #] "[Wing Name]"/[Assigned Ship]/TF:[Task Force acronym]/[Fleet #]Flt/SC/VEN/VE [Medals] [Exam Certifications]

For members in Fleet Command:[edit]

[Position acronym]/[Rank acronym] [Name and Callsign]/[Assigned Ship]/TF:[Task Force acronym]/[Fleet #]Flt/FC/VEN/VE [Medals] [Exam Certifications]

Three Things to Note:

  • Firstly, you may not need to use every section of the ID Line format. As a new Trainee, you don't have a Flight Designation, Squadron, Ship, or Wing, yet, nor do you currently have any Medals or Certifications. So to begin with, your ID Line will look much different from those of other members.
  • Secondly, the brackets - the [ and ] symbols - are only provided to visually separate the various sections of information required. Do not include them when you write out your ID Line.
  • Thirdly, you do need to keep the / symbols between the sections as they're shown, on the other hand.

Got Questions?[edit]

We understand if this system seems confusing to you at first; it's fairly complex. If you need help, any member of the VENA Staff will be more than willing to answer your questions. If none of them are available, you can also try any veteran Navy member. You can contact these people through a private message on the ComNet, a post in your training topic, or through mIRC. The Naval Academy's room is #VENA, and there's almost always a staff member around.

Specific Information for the Sections of the ID Line[edit]

Position[edit]

Your position is the role you play in the Navy. For your first ID line, this will be Trainee (shown as TRN). Once you transition to active duty, it will change. If you've joined the Starfighter Corps, it will became Flight Member (FM), and if you've joined Fleet Command, it will become Junior Bridge Officer (JBO). As your career in the Vast Empire Navy develops your position can change to many different things. For the complete list of all positions within the Vast Empire Navy, see Naval Positions.

Common Position Abbreviations[edit]

Position Abbreviation
Naval Commander in Chief NCC
Chief of Naval Operations CNO
Chief of Naval Training CNT
Chief of Naval Warfare CNW
Chief of Naval Intelligence CNI
Fleet Commander FCO
Task Force Commander TFC
Capital Ship Captain SCAP
Capital Ship Executive Officer XO
Wing Commander WC
Squadron Commander SCO
Squadron Executive Officer SXO
Capital Ship Bridge Officer BO
Flight Leader FL
Capital Ship Junior Bridge Officer JBO

Trainee TRN

Rank[edit]

Your rank reflects your time in the Navy, and your cumulative contributions to the Division. You start as a Crewman (CRW). When you have graduated from your chosen training School this will change to reflect your promotion. You will become a Leading Crewman (or, in exceptional cases, a Senior Crewman), and then progress upward through the rank hierarchy: you rank will most likely change several times over the course of your career. It's important to note, though, that in the VE, the "chain of command" actually references members' Positions, not their Ranks (in other words, the Naval Command in Chief "outranks" everyone on the chain of command, regardless of his/her actual Rank in relation to other members - the Position of NCC is what really counts). With that said, Rank often connotes authority and seniority, meaning higher ranked members are generally the ones in command positions, making them good people to come to with questions.

Rank Abbreviations[edit]

Command Enlisted
Rank Abbreviation Rank Abbreviation
Grand Admiral GAD Chief Warrant Officer CWO
Sector Admiral SAD Warrant Officer 1st Class WO1
High Admiral HAD Warrant Officer 2nd Class WO2
Fleet Admiral FAD Master Chief Petty Officer MCPO

Vice Admiral VAD Chief Petty Officer CPO
Rear Admiral RAD Petty Officer 1st Class PO1
Commodore COM Petty Officer 2nd Class PO2
Line Captain LCP Senior Crewman SCW
Captain CPT Leading Crewman LCW
Commander CDR Crewman CRW
Lieutenant Commander LCM
Lieutenant LT
Lieutenant Junior Grade LTJG
Ensign ESN

Name/Callsign:[edit]

Your callsign is your character's nickname, and in addition to being included in your ID Line, it should also be your display name on the ComNet. Members of Fleet Command are also required to include their character's full name in this section, since callsigns are mostly used in the Starfighter Corps. If you want to use another callsign on the ComNet than what your display name shows, you can contact the Naval High Command about getting it changed.

Flight Designation:[edit]

Starfighter squadrons in the Vast Empire use three flights (or, more rarely, four). Each flight is made up of four starfighters, for a total of twelve (or sixteen in rare cicrumstances). The three standard flights are Aurek, Besh, and Cresh, and the optional fourth is Dorn. All flights are abbreviated using their first letter, and within each flight there are four positions: 1, 2, 3, and 4. Normally the Flight Leader (FL) is in the number 1 position.

So, if you're in Besh flight, position three, this section of your ID Line would read: B-3

Squadron #/Squadron Name[edit]

This is the squadron to which you belong, if you're in the SC. At the moment there are only two player-character squadrons in the Vast Imperial Navy: Tuk'ata, and Raptor. Tuk'ata is a combat duty squadron, flying TIE Interceptors. Raptor is our training squadron, also flying TIE Interceptors.

Each squadron has a numerical designation as its official designation, in addition to the nickname it's more commonly called. Those are:

  • 26th Vast Imperial Fighter Squadron: "Tuk'ata"
  • 137th Vast Imperial Training Squadron: "Raptor"

Other squadrons:

  • 82nd Vast Imperial Fighter Squadron: "Nightshrike"
  • 153rd Vast Imperial Fighter Squadron: "Regents"

So, when you start out you'll be in Raptor squadron. This section of your ID Line should read: S:137 "Raptor"

Wing #/Wing Name[edit]

This is the wing to which your squadron belongs. At the moment there are three player-character wings in the Vast Imperial Navy: 58th Javelin Wing, 82nd Scimitar Wing, and the 46th Shield Wing. Regents is in Javelin, Nightshrike is in Scimitar, and Raptor is in Shield.

This section of the ID Line will read: W:52 "Javelin", W:245 "Scimitar" or W:46 "Shield"

Assigned Ship[edit]

This is the ship to which you are assigned. For most Starfighter Corps personnel (meaning fighter pilots) this will be the modified Super Star Destroyer Atrus. Later on you may get the opportunity to deploy on another ship. For most Fleet Command personnel, you will likely by assigned to different vessels. Those who reach the rank of Warrant Officer 2nd Class - in either branch - may even be granted command of their own ships.

This section of the ID Line will read:
For Tuk'ata Squadron: mSSD Atrus
For Raptor Squadron (SC Trainees): PLF Cappadocious (Note: PLF Cappadocious isn't a ship, but it is where Raptor Squadron is based)
For FC Trainees: PLF Cappadocious (Again, the Naval Platform is not a ship, per se, but it is where your initial training takes place) For other ships/individual commands: [Ship Type Abbreviation] [Ship Name]

Remember: Ship names are always capitalized and italicized.

Task Force[edit]

This is the Task Force of which your unit is a part. If you are in Nightshrike Squadron, or are in the 1st Fleet in a different capacity, you are in Task Force Aurek (TF:A). If you are in Regents Squadron, or are otherwise a member of the 2nd Fleet, you are in Task Force Besh (TF:B). If you are in Raptor Squadron, or are somehow involved with the 3rd Fleet, you are in Task Force Thesh (TF:TH).

This section of the ID Line will read: TF:[Task Force Abbreviation]

Fleet #[edit]

This is the Fleet to which your Task Force belongs. In the Vast Empire Navy there are currently a total of seven fleets, each serving its own purpose within the Navy. For most pilots or officers on active duty, you will most likely be assigned to either the First Fleet (Defensive Operations) or the Second Fleet (Offensive Operations). Or, if you are a Trainee, you are assigned to the Third Fleet (Support and Training). If you are invited to join Naval Intelligence, you are in the Seventh Fleet.

This section of the ID Line will read: 1Flt, 2Flt, 3Flt, or 7Flt.

Fleet Abbreviation
1st Vast Imperial Fleet (Defensive Operations) 1Flt
2nd Vast Imperial Fleet (Offensive Operations) 2Flt
3rd Vast Imperial Fleet (Support and Training) 3Flt
7th Vast Imperial Fleet (Naval Intelligence) 7Flt

For a more complete listing of all Capital Ships, Task Forces, and Fleets, see Naval Fleet

Branch[edit]

This is the branch of the Navy in which you serve. The Navy has the following branches: the Starfighter Corps (SC) and Fleet Command (FC). New members may choose which branch in which to serve. However, those still in earliest stages of initial training will simply be identified as being enrolled in the Vast Empire Naval Academy (VENA).

This section of the ID Line will read: SC, FC or VENA

VEN & VE[edit]

VEN stands for Vast Imperial Navy, and VE stands for Vast Empire. Everyone in the Navy sports these two sections, and we wear them with pride.

VEN should read: VEN VE should read: VE

Medals[edit]

You may earn medals as you continue your career in the Navy. When you do, their abbreviations are placed at the end of your ID line, in order of importance as they appear on the awards page. Note that each award should be shown separately, and should be capped with brackets. Those brackets should be the [ and ] symbols. A complete list of medals Navy members can receive is here: VEN_Awards_Main

Certification Exams[edit]

You earn these for completing stories which satisfy the requirements of the Naval Certification program, which you'll do throughout your career in the Navy. They are capped, like medals, but with the ( and ) symbols. Note that as you complete the three tiers of any individual Certification, you will have additional "special" symbols to include. Also, please note that veteran members may display exam acronyms/symbols which are no longer in use.

Let's look at an example. Say a member's Certification Exams sections looks like this: (=*AE*=)(=*SAE*=)(=*TG*=)(=BO=). That indicates that the example member has earned perfect scores on his/her Aviator's Exam and Senior Aviator's Exam (both now no longer in use), completed all three tiers of the Top Gun Certification, and completed the first tier of the Bridge Officer Certification.
