As a member of the Navy, you are expected to know a lot of information about the VEN division as it exists in the real world as part of the VE club, and a lot about the Vast Imperial Navy as it exists in the club's canon shared story setting. For those of you unfamiliar with any type of military organization, this may be a lot to take in at first. But try not to worry; the details of rank structures and position responsibilities become second nature relatively quickly.

This Basic Information category page is your introduction to military organization, and to the Imperial Navy's take on it. Here you will be able to pick up on some of the nomenclature used in the Navy, and learn about the equipment that allows us to do out jobs, in-story. It is not a definitive source, but rather a good starting guide.

The following sections break down the information presented in usable and relevant sections by topic.

Components of the Stormtrooper Corps[edit]

The Stormtrooper Corps is the direct descendant of the Grand Army of the Republic, created to combat the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. At the time, one of the largest armies ever created managed to fight in over a thousand theaters of war against overwhelming odds.

Tipoca City, on Kamino, was the primary cloning center, creating the original 1.2 million clones that participated in the war's opening battles. An additional two million were initially grown, decanted and trained at the Baran Wu and Su Des stations, with the clone portion army swelling to billions of troops by the war's end. The original clone groups were said to average a 200 to 1 kill ratio against their droid adversaries; experience only improved this.

Led primarily by Jedi and subordinate clone commanders, the GAR forces learned to fight in all environments, with some receiving specialized pilot, environment, and commando training. While the Jedi General concept is no longer used, the specialization of roles remains a part of the Army.

One legacy of the GAR that remains is the Mandalorian cult amongst some members of the the Army, specifically the stormtroopers. The original cloning template was, of course, the bounty hunter Jango Fett, and the Kaminoans hired many ex-Mandalorian soldiers as combat trainers and drill instructors. The Mando culture of brotherhood, endurance, and loyalty as well as its language and traditions were a major influence on these early troopers.

This diminished a bit as flash training of clones became the norm, as well as the conscription of non-clone stock and the use of other, non-Mandalorian clone templates. Even so, the army's anthem remains Vode An (Brothers All), an adaptation of a Mandalorian marching chant. The GAR's motto remains that of the Imperial Army as well: Kote Darasuum, or Eternal Glory as is translated from the Mando'a.

Indeed, any man between the ages of 18 and 30 who scores in the top fifteen percentile of his military aptitude tests will likely be contacted by an Imperial recruiting agent to enlist and to potentially arrange DNA sampling for cloning. Men who do not score that high are still wanted as regular troopers.

The present day Army consists of various components:

  1. Stormtroopers
  2. Regular Army troopers
  3. Civilian militias
  4. Conscripted local forces

Within the Corps itself, as we are nominally not a part of the Army but an adjunct to it, we have the following subsets of troopers:

  1. Advanced Recon Commandos (ARC)
  2. Advisors
  3. Reserves
  4. Retirees

Structure of the Imperial Navy[edit]

Structure of Fleet Command[edit]

While the majority of missions will feature player-characters from all over the Fleet, it is important for new Navy members to understand the unit structure used by the VEN.

Fleet Command is divided into the following components, from largest to smallest in terms of number of ships:

Navy[edit]

Strength: hundreds of ships, organized into multiple Fleets
Notes:
Commander: Naval Commander in Chief

Fleet[edit]

Strength: 20 - 30 ships
Notes: Versatile sub-unit of the Starfighter Wing.
Commander: Fleet Commanding Officer

Task Force[edit]

Strength: 10 - 15 ships
Notes: Standard operational sub-unit for diverse situations.
Commander: Task Force Commanding Officer

Wolfpack[edit]

Strength: 3 - 6 ships
Notes: Operational sub-unit primarily used for smaller capital ships.
Commander: Wolfpack Leader

Ship[edit]

Strength: 1 ship
Notes: The most basic unit in Fleet Command, a single capital ship.
Commander: Ship Captain.

Members serving in Fleet Command are called "crewers". Capital ship crews are divided into the following components, from largest to smallest in terms of the number of crewers:

Crew[edit]
Strength: up to 7 Crew Sections (Command, Engineering, Helm, Communications, Battle Operations, Medical, Security) of PCs = up to 84 crewers
Notes: Standard operational unit.
Commander: Ship Captain
Crew Section[edit]
Strength: maximum of 3 Teams = 4-12 crewers
Notes: Standard operational unit encompassing all the player-characters of a particular discipline (like Engineering, Medical, or Communications) aboard a particular ship.
Commander: Section Commanding Officer
Crew Team[edit]
Strength: 2 Duos = 4 crewers
Notes: Standard operational sub-unit for most situations.
Commander: Section Leader, sometimes called a Team Leader
Crew Duo[edit]
Strength: 2 crewers
Notes: The most basic sub-unit, composed of two teammates who work closely with each other.
Commander: Generally at least a Senior Crewman (SCRW), there is no formal position for Duo Leaders.

Structure of the Starfighter Corps[edit]

While the majority of missions will be squadron-level interactions, it is important for new Navy members to understand the unit structure used by the VEN.

Members serving in the Starfighter Corps are called "pilots". The Starfighter Corps is divided into the following components, from largest to smallest in terms of number of pilots:

Wing[edit]
Strength: 2 Groups = 6 Squadrons = 72+ pilots
Notes: Standard operational unit of 6 squadrons, the standard complement of starfighters aboard an Imperial-class Star Destroyer.
Commander: Wing Commander
Group[edit]
Strength: 3 Squadrons = 36+ pilots
Notes: Versatile sub-unit of the Starfighter Wing.
Commander: Group Captain
Squadron[edit]
Strength: 3 (or rarely, 4) Flights = 12-16 pilots
Notes: Standard operational unit.
Commander: Squadron Commanding Officer
Flight[edit]
Strength: 2 Elements = 4 pilots
Notes: Standard operational sub-unit for most situations.
Commander: Flight Leader
Element[edit]
Strength: 2 pilots
Notes: The most basic sub-unit, composed of two wingmen.
Commander: Generally at least a Senior Crewman (SCRW), there is no formal position for Element Leaders.

Rank Structure[edit]

All Navy members begin with their player-characters as enlisted personnel, and can work their way up through the rank system as follows:

At this point, a VEN member may be promoted into the true Officer ranks. There are many sources of commissioned officers, in-story:
Graduates of the Imperial Academy system, whether from the campus on Imperial Center (Coruscant), the ones on Carida or Anaxes, or any of the other satellite institutions that were accredited under Palpatine's reign.
Graduates of other military academies, from various planetary defense forces, may elect to be commissioned in the Imperial Navy.
Enlisted personnel or college graduates from the Vast Empire who successfully complete Officer Candidate School (OCS).
Lawyers, doctors, nurses, veterinarians, chaplains, and various other professionals may be directly commissioned into their respective corps.
Enlisted soldiers may also earn battlefield commissions for valor and leadership during actual combat.

  • Officer Ranks, High Command - High Command Officers are few, but very powerful, leading the Navy to victory in political and diplomatic arenas as well as military ones

Leadership[edit]

Currently, Supreme Moff Kadann, as the head of the Vast Empire, is the civilian executive in command of the Vast Empire's Navy.

The professional head of the Vast Empire's Navy is the Naval Commander in Chief (NCC). The current NCC is Stormz.

The military chain of command as determined by the Vast Imperial Navy is as follows (the numbers are a scale of relative authority, with 0 representing the most, and 17 representing the least). Please note: OOC, the Starfighter Corps is equal to Fleet Command, with the same career opportunities available to members regardless of which branch they choose to start out in, even though IC, the Starfighter Corps is a subdivision of Fleet Command, and starfighters serve a support role for capital ships. That is why the numbers are arranged as follows.

  • Vast Empire's High Council - 0
    • Naval Commander in Chief - 1
      • Chief of Naval Operations - 2

  • Aerospace Superiority Pilots
  • Bombardment Pilots
  • Commando Pilots

Equipment[edit]

Vast Empire-Specific Equipment[edit]

Starfighters[edit]

The starfighter squadrons of Blade Wing are well-known for pulling off special operations missions, and they have been granted access to some of the latest equipment available.

According to internal doctrine, the Imperial Army relies on the best equipped and trained individual soldier as possible as the basic element, and aims to multiply his effectivivity with the most advanced tactics possible. This has indeed made the Imperial Army the most advanced land force in the world, but has also caused new problems. Since this doctrine causes high expenses on each soldier, it has made warfare very expensive, which is a detriment to the Empire when large scale conflicts like the Rebellion occur.
