Character Page Tutorial

Intro

As part of the Academy training, all recruits are required to create a wiki profile for their character. In order to create/edit pages on this particular wiki, you must first register an account. This tutorial will help with the basics of wiki-page creation.

New Page

So the first thing we need to cover is how to make a new page. This can be confusing at first, but it's very simple when you know how:

• First, Type your callsign or character name into the search bar of the wiki.
• Press enter.
• When confronted with the "no article exists" page, click on 'create an article with this title'.

This creates a blank page with your callsign or character name as the title, which will hold all the information regarding your character.

Linking Page and Saving Work

Before you go any farther, you should probably link your page to the archive that has all of the other character pages on it. This isn’t as difficult as it may seem:

• Put the following at the bottom of your wiki page: [[Category:NavyMembers|Your Page Name]] [[Category:Your Current Rank]]
• Remember to replace “Your Name” and “Your Rank” with the actual data.

The first links your page to the Navy Members list. The second links it to the Naval rank board (so change it when you get a promotion). These two links should remain at the very bottom of your Wiki page.

This would also be a good time to save your work. This is simply done by hitting the Save Page button under the editing window. Click the edit tab at the top to return to making your wiki page.

The Templates

Stats Template

Now we are getting into templates. Templates are items, such as tables and info sheets, that can be inserted into pages without having to type in all of the code. (Because they've been 'designed' elsewhere on the wiki - think of templates like shortcuts.) The first one is for a basic run down of your character. It goes at the very top of your Wiki page.

We'll be working with an example here. Delete the data and fill it in with your own (just put N/A after image for now) Leave the brackets and other symbols; double brackets are links within the Wiki.

Page Organization Template

This isn’t technically a template since it doesn’t have hidden coding somewhere else. It is used to make each character page uniform. This section of code goes between the template and the links at the bottom. In the first section, fill in my stuff with yours again. The rest are explained under the headings: (By the way, it'll look a heck of a lot better once you paste it into your wiki page because it'll be spaced out then.)

Ok, I’m going to tell you a little bit about what I’m asking you to copy and paste. The double equal signs mark a heading. The triple equal signs mark a sub-heading. The nice thing about headings is that you can edit them separately instead of having to scroll through the whole edit window. Under the first heading are brackets (which I already told you were links) and stars (which will become bullet points after you click Save Page. Than Sion is my page, look at it any time you want to make sure you are putting your own together right.
